When it comes to having to decide which type of dog is the best breed for the apartment, most of the time we focus on what we want or like. Maybe you will like Chihuahuas, but there is a lion-sized hole in your door, or it may be a beautiful golden retriever, but your fence is too short. Maybe you will like a huge Bernese, but you live in an apartment. You must pause for a while and take some time to consider the needs of your new dog. Following this guide can help you determine which type of dog will be the happiest life in your apartment.

The best dog breed if you live in an apartment
Lazy couch potatoes are ideal for apartment living. In addition, size is really important, because large claws and long tails are not suitable for small spaces. Also, consider how noisy this dog is and how well this breed performs socially, as they will do a lot with many neighbors and dogs who live there.

That being said, here are some dog breeds suited for apartment life:

  • Bichon Frise: they never grow over a foot and shed less than its close relatives;
  • Bulldog: rarely get taller than 18 inches and they are as lazy as can be;
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: they are very attracted to their owner and love belly rubs;
  • Chihuahua: a great apartment dog due to size and barely needs to walk;
  • Chinese Crested: low maintenance, ability to stay in bed for hours, and minimum exercise requirement;
  • Dachshund: shortest of the hound dogs, needs very little exercise on his short legs;
  • French Bulldog: compact size of a Bulldog they also make the perfect apartment pet;
  • Greyhound: surprised? Despite their energy level, these dogs are such good boys that they do great in an apartment.  Just take them out for daily walks;
  • Maltese: these little ones are great companions but suffer from separation anxiety.  Good for stay-at-home owners;
  • Miniature Pinscher: his small size makes him great for an apartment;
  • Pekingese: they are small and affectionate. Socialize them early as they are pretty wary of strangers;
  • Pomeranian: they are energetic but independent. Take them for daily walks to steam out all that energy;
  • Poodle: toy and Miniature Poodles are good for an apartment.  Not the Standard as they can reach up to 70 pounds;
  • Pug: these dogs are mostly inactive and quiet;
  • Shih Tzu: their affection and calmness make them perfect for apartment life.
